Thanks to Kit Carter, lawyer at Carpmaels & Ransford in London, for entering the above photo in our 3rd International Lawyers’ Photography Awards.
Kit said:
“I hope you are well. Delighted to see you are running another lawyers photography competition. My entry is attached. I took it last week in Melanissi Cave in Kefalonia. It was a wonderful moment, we were on a boat on a lake inside a cave part of the roof of which collapsed in an earthquake in 1953. As we emerged from the dark part of the cave a flock of birds returned to roost. In front you can see another boat of tourists in a shaft of sunlight floating on the clear turquoise water.”

Kit Carter
Lawyer at Carpmaels & Ransford
London
Kit is a solicitor in the dispute resolution team where her practice focuses on the pharmaceutical and life sciences sector. Before training as a solicitor, Kit worked and studied for 10 years in the field of immunology, genetics and molecular biology. During this time she developed an understanding of drug development from the lab, through clinical trials, regulatory approvals, manufacturing and supply chain, procurement and launch. She applies this knowledge to provide commercial and strategic advice to clients in the context of actual or threatened patent litigation.
Kit has experience of patent litigation in the UK High Court and Court of Appeal, as well as advising on pan-European and global patent litigation strategy for clients in areas including pharmaceuticals (small molecules and biologicals), medical devices, in vitro diagnostics and genetic testing. Kit has also advised clients in relation to SPCs, oppositions before the European Patent Office and pharmaceutical regulatory law.
Kit obtained a first class degree in immunology from Kings College London and has a PhD in inflammation and autoimmunity from the University of Cambridge. Her PhD research, conducted in collaboration with Yale University, concerned application of monoclonal antibodies to cell-surface signalling molecules to suppress the autoimmune response in type 1 diabetes. She also spent time in research labs in London and Oxford studying the genetic basis of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, and carrying out genetic sequencing and cloning to identify transporter proteins involved in cystic fibrosis.
Kit trained and qualified as a solicitor at a leading international law firm where she also obtained higher rights of audience. She joined Carpmaels & Ransford after spending time at a boutique patent litigation practice in London.
Kit has a daughter and two sons who make good use of her time when out of the office. She enjoys camping, gardening and escaping South East London for the Isle of Wight as often as possible (which is not often enough).
