MARGARET’S TALK
Margaret has kindly agreed to share her amazing Story with us including her promotion from Director of Legal to CEO of Sunderland Football Club in 2011.
MARGARET BYRNE, CEO of SUNDERLAND A.F.C.
Margaret Byrne grew up in Northern Ireland and was educated at university in both Belfast and London, studying consumer studies and law respectively. She initially trained at Galbraith Branley and after specialising in financial settlements, divorce cases and criminal law, she moved to Goodman Ray, one of the UK’s top family law solicitors. Margaret is dual qualified, being a lawyer in Republic of Ireland as well as England and Wales.
In 2007, Margaret was appointed as Sunderland AFC Club Secretary and in-house lawyer, working at the time with Roy Keane as Manager and Niall Quinn as Chairman and she was instrumental in building the club’s strong inhouse legal team. In September 2010, she was shortlisted for the UK in-house lawyer of the year and in summer 2011 she was appointed Chief Executive Officer and was voted onto the FA Council, as a Premier League representative, that same year.
Margaret holds a number of influential positions across footballs governing bodies. She is a member of the Premier League Legal Advisory Group (LAG), the Professional Football Negotiating and Consultation Committee (PFNCC) and the Football Regulatory Authority (FRA). She was also recently appointed to the FA’s International Committee.
Margaret’s charitable works comes in the form of her being Company Secretary of The Foundation of Light. As Company Secretary of this charitable organisation, Margaret ensures governance of the Charity is adhered to but also helps the organisations development, helping it to work with over 40,000 young people and their families in the North East of England each year.
In 2012, she was also appointed as a Trustee of The Development Board of the University of Sunderland.
