It is hard to believe that the Club will be having its 5th birthday in October.

To celebrate our 5th anniversary,  I am very excited to announce that we are hosting our INAUGURAL SUMMIT on 2 November.

I am am absolutely delighted that Funke Abimbola, Ed Smith, Tim Grayson, Andrew Magowan and Richard Tapp have all kindly agreed to be our guest speakers and give us a Talk about their career journeys.

I would love if you could join us at one our special one-off event.

For those of you living outside London at our other international chapters (in New York, Dublin, Boston, Dubai and San Francisco), it would be terrific if you were in a position to join us at our inaugural SUMMIT.

Edward Smith

General Counsel at O2 (a Telefonica company)


Ed was a corporate lawyer at Pinsents and then Freshfields before joining BT Cellnet (now Telefonica UK) in 2001.

He has seen the demerger with BT plc, the sales to Telefonica SA and now, the proposed sale to CK Hutchison.

Reporting to the CEO, he is responsible for the legal, regulatory, company secretarial, risk, and internal audit functions.

He has been involved in a number of memorable deals, not least the deal with Apple which saw O2 introduce the iPhone to the UK in 2007, and O2’s network sharing deal with Vodafone.


Funke Abimbola

Funke is a senior leader for Roche, the world’s largest biotech.

She leads the legal, corporate compliance and data protection functions supporting Roche’s pharmaceutical operations in the UK, Ireland, Malta and Gibraltar. She is currently the most senior black lawyer working within the UK’s pharmaceutical industry and one of the most senior globally. She has been recognised by the Financial Times as being one of the top 20 BAME leaders across the UK, Ireland and US (UPStanding100 2016 Powerlist).

A multi award winning solicitor and diversity campaigner, she has received both national and European recognition for both her legal and diversity work.

Funke speaks regularly at conferences in the UK and abroad including to school students as part of Speakers4Schools and to University students as a Professional Ambassador and Advisory Board Member of Aspiring Solicitors.  She is a Champion and Advisory Board Member for Women in Law London (a network of almost 2,000 women lawyers, supporting the pipeline of female lawyers) and is a Project Champion for the First 100 Years Project (creating a digital library to celebrate 100 years of women lawyers in the UK). In 2015, she founded the Women Leaders in Life Sciences Law network to support the international pipeline of female legal talent within the life sciences sector. In addition, she is a Steering Committee member for DRIVE, a House of Lords-based diversity recruitment drive chaired by Baroness Royall, former Labour leader of the House.

An expert mentor and sponsor, Funke is a proud working mother juggling the demands of career and home. She advises working mothers on achieving life balance. Passionate about the law, diversity, education and healthcare, she is a regular media commentator, a keen fundraiser for various charities (including Cancer Research UK) and has twice served as school governor and as a board director.

She was recently admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, recognizing the positive impact and outstanding contributions that she has made to British society as a whole.


Richard Tapp

Richard is Company Secretary and Director of Legal Services.  He leads on legal and regulatory matters for Carillion globally, heading Carillion Legal and Carillion Secretariat, and has direct responsibility for the Ethics and Compliance Office, Corporate Communications, Government Affairs and Carillion Insurance.  He is also responsible for Carillion Advice Services, which provides a range of managed legal services offerings and resources, including as the largest provider of telephone advice services under the Legal Aid scheme.

Richard is a Solicitor, and a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators.  He holds first and post-graduate degrees in Law, together with that of Master of Business Administration.

He has led a range of innovative legal sourcing arrangements for Carillion, including the formation and development of the Carillion Legal Network. He speaks and writes on legal management and corporate governance issues, and is the co-author of Managing External Legal Resources (ICSA) and The In-House Lawyer’s Toolkit (Law Society Publishing). He is also General Editor and author of a number of contributions to The Future of the In-House Lawyer (Law Society Publishing, 2016).   He won the Most Innovative European In-House lawyer in the 2013 FT Innovative Lawyers awards.

Before joining Carillion, he was for six years Company Secretary and Group Legal Adviser for Blue Circle Industries PLC, a FT-SE 100 global heavy building materials business. He has established, run and integrated in-house legal teams in North and South America, Europe, Australasia, the Middle East and Asia.

Richard serves as a Trustee of the British Occupational Health Research Foundation and the International Senior Lawyers’ Project – UK.  He is a member of the Advisory Committee of the Centre for Ethics and Law at University College, London.  He was formerly a member of Council and of the Audit Committee and Finance Committee of Sheffield University.


Andrew Magowan

Andrew Magowan is General Counsel & Company Secretary of ASOS, the AIM-listed global online fashion retailer.

He has responsibility for risk and reputation management across ASOS, including the legal, corporate governance, compliance and insurance functions, as well as Corporate Responsibility and The ASOS Foundation.

Before joining ASOS in January 2012, Andrew was Global Operations Legal Director for oil and gas helicopter services provider Bristow Group and, prior to that, was General Counsel & Company Secretary for FTSE-listed Alpha Airports Group.

He started as a corporate lawyer with BLP for five years, before gaining his initial in-house experience with FTSE 100 multinational food processing and retailing company, Associated British Foods.   Andrew read for a law degree at the University of Oxford.


Tim Grayson

Tim is an English qualified lawyer in Investment Banking Division (IBD) Legal at Goldman Sachs in London.

Previously, he was a member of the Special Execution Group in IBD.

Tim joined Goldman Sachs as an associate in 2000 and was named managing director in 2012.

Prior to joining the firm, Tim worked at Linklaters, a leading English law firm, in the London, New York, Washington, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Bangkok offices.

Tim earned an MA in Jurisprudence from the University of Oxford in 1995 and also studied at the College of Law in Chester.
